Project ChildSafe Partners with Somerset County

Sheriff's Office to Promote Firearm Safety Education

In a 10-day tour to promote responsible firearm ownership, Project ChildSafe, (PCS), will begin its safety education tour in New Jersey on Saturday, October 15, 2005. PCS will conduct community safety day events throughout the state with support of local law enforcement agencies. Free gunlocks and educational materials will be distributed at Wal-Mart in Watchung on Sunday, October 16, from 11:00am - 5:00pm.

PCS will give the community an opportunity to interact with the Somerset County Sheriffs Office and get a free gun lock along with educational brochures, children's safety pledges, badges and bookmarks. NJ children are encouraged to take the PCS Pledge. The signed pledge is meant to be presented to parents by children to show their commitment to be safe around firearms.

Created and managed by the National Shooting Sports Foundation and funded through grants from the US Department of Justice, PCS has successfully distributed over 30 million free gunlocks across the country. "Thanks to the overwhelming support of our state and community partners, Project ChildSafe has now distributed free firearm safety kits in nearly every single community in America and in all 50 states," said Doug Painter, president of the National Shooting Sports Foundation. "We will continue to remind all gun owners to safely store their firearms in the home and to encourage parents to educate their children about firearm safety."

PCS is dedicated to educating firearm owners on proper handling and storage techniques and is designed to make homes with firearms safer. The goal is to prevent needless accidents from occurring in the home. The program is reaching out to gun owners, non gun owners, parents, neighbors and friends to encourage everyone to educate their children on firearm safety.
